Medigap Plan F High Deductible (Medicare Supplement)
Please note: Medigap insurance is the exact same type of policy as Medicare Supplement insurance. If you read about one or the other, these two policies are 100% the exact same, just two different names.
Medigap Plan F High Deductible gives you the most complete supplement coverage that Medicare recipients can buy. In fact, more than any other plan available for supplement insurance, the high deductible option brings those beneficiaries the broadest coverage. This plan is much more cost effective, but the actual benefits don’t kick in until you pay the full deductible amount. Once you meet the deductible, you have the same exact coverage as the regular Plan F. If you compare Medigap Plan F High Deductible with the regular Plan F, the monthly premium is much lower due to the high deducible. Your premium is based on many factors such as the carrier you choose, gender, age and current health conditions.
Medigap Plan F High Deductible
Most of the time, Medicare recipients that select Plan F High Deductible Medigap plans don’t expect they’ll need a ton of healthcare coverage. If you do expect to have a lot of doctor office visits, hospital visits or are prone to medical conditions then the regular Medigap Plan F is the better option for you. This plan is best known for its coverage in areas like Medicare approved home care. Lets say you are receiving Medicare approved home care for a chronic condition. Medigap High Deductible Plan F insurance will pay the Part B deductible and then pay for the 20 percent of the costs that Medicare Part A does not pay for after its limits are reached.
In other words, you’ll have complete coverage and no out of pocket costs except for the deductible, which you’ll pay up front. Once you have paid the deductible, all future expenses for Medicare-approved home care will be completely covered by the plan.
Another area where this plan can help beneficiaries is hospitalization. Medicare Part A will normally pay for all but the deductible for the first 60 days. After you have paid your deductible, Plan F will cover the rest of the charges. If you have an extended stay in the hospital up to 90 days, Medicare High Deductible Plan F will cover all expenses that are not covered by Medicare Part A.
Another form of hospitalization is when you are admitted into a skilled nursing facility to help you continue to recover from your illness or injury. After you pay your deductible, Plan F will start to pay the daily amount that Medicare Part A does not pay for, up through the 100th day.
Finally, for general diagnostic tests and inpatient/outpatient treatment, Medicare Medigap High Deductible F will completely pay for excess Medicare Part B charges that are not covered by Original Medicare. Below is a High Deductible Plan F Medigap Benefits Chart.
When Should I Apply for a Medigap Plan F High Deductible Plans
Once you’re enrolled in Medicare Part B and are 65 years or older, your Open Enrollment Period begins. This is when you should apply for one of the Medigap Plan F High Deductible Plans. The actual start date of your Open Enrollment Period is the first day of the month your 65 and have Medicare Part B, this period lasts 6 months and can’t be delayed or restarted. Lets say you turned 65 on April 26th but didn’t enroll in Medicare Part B until June 27th. This would make your OEP begin on July 1st. It’s important to purchase a policy during this period because it gives you Guaranteed Issue. Guaranteed Issue is a term commonly used in the health insurance industry that means a policy is offered to any eligible applicant without regard to their current health issues.
During this period, regardless of your health problems, a carrier can’t do any of the following:
- Delay the start of your coverage
- Deny you coverage
- Charge you a higher premium
It’s important to keep in mind that some carriers have a preexisting condition waiting period that can stay in effect for up to 6 months if you enroll after your Open Enrollment Period. This mean they can refuse to cover any of your out of pocket costs for any medicare services related to the preexisting condition. However, Original Medicare will continue to pay for the medical costs incurred during this time, you’ll just be responsible for any coinsurance or co-payments.
You can shorten this waiting period if:
- You’re replacing any current health coverage you have that’s creditable
- You had 6 months or more of continuous prior coverage
- You didn’t have any breaks in coverage that lasted longer than 63 days
You can simply avoid this waiting period by applying during your Open Enrollment Period.
