A number of additional disabilities can qualify a person who is not 65.

With that said please note, not all states offer supplement plans to those not reached 65 years old, however, in the state of Pennsylvania they offer all 10 letter plans and the rates will be the same as the Pennsylvania Medigap rates for those over 65.

Examples of additional illnesses that may qualify a person for Medicare are Lou Gehrig’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Persons who are collecting Social Security Disability for physical and mental illnesses can collect Medicare after 24 months of program eligibility.

Medicare recipients with End Stage Renal Disease, that turned 65 years old, made up almost 10,000 of the total amount of recipients in 2013. The total amount of disabled Medicare recipients in 2013 with ESRD was a little over 8,000.

The 4 Different Types of Medicare

  1. Part A Medicare covers hospital visits. The plan covers many of the expenses that accrue during a person’s stay in a hospital. Plan A covers blood transfusions after 3 pints, hospice care, and nursing facility care, as well.
  2. Medicare Part B covers a portion of a doctor visit. These expenses may include doctors’ visits, outpatient care services, and a variety of diabetes related treatments and diagnostics.
  3. Part C of Medicare allows a person to gain access to some of the services that Parts A and B may not cover. Some people refer to this part as Medicare Advantage.
  4. Prescription drugs are covered under Medicare Part D. A person who is eligible for Part D coverage may have to pay a portion of the bill for their prescriptions, which is called co-pay.

An example of services that Part C may cover are prescription drugs, hearing tests, vision services and more. Advantage plans consist of a network of doctors who provide various services to people who have Medicare. A person with Part C may have a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan, a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan or a Medicare Special Needs Plan (SNP).

Pennsylvania Medigap policies are supplementary plans that compliment your Original Medicare and reduce the out of pocket costs that you may incur. It covers many of the expenses that Medicare plans do not cover. For example, the co-insurance that other parts of Medicare leave the policyholders with is covered. The plans also cover services such as international care, preventive care and custodial care. These policies are basically designed to pick up where Medicare leaves off.
