Anthem Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans help cover the gaps in Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B) coverage. These gaps include deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and more.

Ten standardized Medicare Supplement plans are identified by a letter, A through N. These options and two high-deductible plans are available to Medicare enrollees.

All Medicare Supplement plans have standardized benefits. So, a Medicare Supplement Plan N through Anthem provides the same benefits as a Medicare Supplement Plan N through Cigna or Mutual of Omaha.

Thus, price, carrier rating, and additional perks are essential to review when choosing a Medicare Supplement carrier.

Anthem only offers four Medigap options to Medicare Beneficiaries. Those plans are:

  • Medicare Supplement Plan A
  • Medicare Supplement Plan F*
  • Medicare Supplement Plan G
  • Medicare Supplement Plan N

However, the most popular Anthem Medicare Supplement plans are Medigap Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N.

*Remember, Medicare Supplement Plan F is only available to those who received Original Medicare before January 1, 2020.

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan F

Anthem offers Medicare Supplement Plan F to those who qualify for coverage. To be eligible for Medigap Plan F, you have Original Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you enroll in Medicare after this date, you are not eligible to enroll in Plan F.

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan F will cover:

  • Medicare Part A deductible
  • Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) care coinsurance
  • Medicare Part B deductible
  • Medicare Part B excess charges
  • Medicare Part B preventive care coinsurance
  • Foreign travel emergency care

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan G

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan G includes all the same benefits as Plan F minus the Medicare Part B deductible. You must meet the deductible before your Medicare Supplement plan covers you at 100%.

For those not eligible for Medicare Supplement Plan F, Plan G is the most comprehensive plan. Plus, the plan has a lower monthly premium, so even those eligible for Medicare Supplement Plan F tend to enroll in Plan G, as it can be more cost-effective in the long run.

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan N

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan N is another excellent Anthem Medigap option. With a lower monthly premium, Medigap Plan N still provides great benefits.

Suppose you enroll in Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan N. In that case, you will be responsible for covering the Medicare Part B deductible, small copayments at the doctor and emergency room, and Medicare excess charges, if applicable. However, excess charges are rare, so you may not encounter them.

Anthem Medicare Supplement Enrollment and Eligibility

To be eligible for an Anthem Medicare Supplement insurance plan, you must enroll in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. Once you are eligible, the best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan is during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment.

This enrollment window begins on the first day of your 65th birth month. However, if you do not enroll in Medicare Part B when you turn 65, it will start on the first day of the month you sign up for Medicare Part B. Either way, your Medigap Open Enrollment window lasts six months.

During this time, you have a guaranteed-issue right to enroll in any available Medicare Supplement plan without answering underwriting health questions. This means no insurer will deny you coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

Suppose you do not enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan during this enrollment period or wish to change your Medicare Supplement plan in the future. In that case, you may have to answer underwriting health questions which could impact your acceptance.

When you enroll in an Anthem Medicare Supplement outside of your guaranteed-issue window, some major health conditions that can result in denial of coverage include:

  • HIV/AIDS
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Mental disorders
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Pending surgery
  • Stroke
  • And more

How Much Do Anthem Medicare Supplement Plans Cost?

Monthly premiums for Anthem Medicare Supplement plans depend on several factors. Although the law requires insurance companies to provide the same benefits for all the lettered plans, there is no regulation on how the carriers price their plans. Thus, comparing multiple carriers’ pricing is crucial when enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan.

However, Anthem Medicare Supplement plans tend to offer a low-to-mid price point in most areas. While their premiums may not always be the lowest, you will want to consider the additional perks of enrolling in an Anthem Medicare Supplement plan.

Anthem Annual Rate Increases

Annual rate increases are state and policy specific. So, all Medicare Supplement Plan G policies with Anthem in a particular state will increase at the same rate. Further, all Plan N policies will have a different rate increase amount.

Each state will see varying percentage increases based on its rating method. Therefore, predicting rate increases can be nearly impossible.

For example, Virginia saw an average 5% rate increase across all Anthem policies. However, Ohio saw a lower rate increase of 4.5%.

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan Reviews

Although Anthem is part of Blue Cross Blue Shield, their Medicare Supplement plans are sold separately, so the ratings are also separate. Unfortunately, Anthem Medicare Supplement plans do not boast the highest ratings compared to other major Medigap carriers.

AM Best ranks Anthem with an A-rating for financial strength and long-term credit. This means the company has a solid foundation that you can rely on for paying claims accurately and on time. However, regarding consumer ratings, the Better Business Bureau ranks Anthem with an F due to several consumer complaints.

    1. Hi Ginger, the 2022 Medicare Part B deductible is $233. This is the deductible you must pay if you are enrolled in the Anthem Plan G.
