Qualifying for United Healthcare Medicare Supplement Plans

United Healthcare Medicare Supplement plansUnited Healthcare Medicare Supplement plans are endorsed by AARP, and you must be an AARP member to enroll.

Other than that unique requirement, eligibility for Medigap is the same no matter which insurance company you use. You can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan if you are at least 65 years old and enrolled in Medicare Part B. Although you can enroll in Part B at any time after you’re 65, you will avoid a late enrollment penalty if you:

  • Sign up when you are first eligible (during the seven-month period around your 65th birthday), or
  • If you are still covered by employer-sponsored insurance when you turn 65, enroll within six months of the date when the employer-sponsored coverage ends.

In some states, you are eligible to enroll in a Medigap plan if you are under 65 and receiving Social Security disability.

The Best Time to Sign Up for United Healthcare Medicare Supplement plans

If you apply for a UHC Medicare Supplement plan during your “initial enrollment period,” UHC will issue you a policy at the same rate everyone else in your locality pays. There are other, limited times when you also have these “guaranteed issue rights.”

However, if you enroll at any other time, your policy will be medically underwritten. You may pay significantly more money if you have pre-existing health conditions. Your six-month initial enrollment period begins on the first day of the first month when you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

The Best United Healthcare Medigap Policies

United Healthcare offers eight AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans. In most states, there are 10 standard Medigap plans, labeled Plan A through Plan N. United Healthcare’s plans provide the same benefits as any other company’s plan with the same letter name. However, the monthly premiums may be different.

Best United Healthcare Medigap PoliciesThe most popular Medigap plans are Plans F, G and N:

  • Plan F covers almost all medical costs not paid by Original Medicare, including the Parts A and B deductible, all copays and coinsurance, and “excess charges” – an added charge of up to 15 percent that providers may ask you to pay if they feel Medicare’s reimbursement rates are too low.
  • Plan G has all the same benefits of Plan F. However, it does not cover the annual Medicare Part B deductible ($183 for 2018).
  • Plan N also has many of the benefits of Plan F. However, it does not cover the Part B deductible or excess charges. It also requires a small copay for doctor and emergency room visits.

Other Medigap Plans Available:

The federal government requires all carriers to offer Plan A, Plan C and Plan F. Plan A is the most affordable plan that covers you against the basic out-of-pocket costs of Medicare Part A coinsurance and Medicare Part B coinsurance.

United Healthcare Medicare Supplement Plan B has the same benefits as Plan A. Additionally, it covers your Medicare Part A deductible.

Plan C offers additional benefits like paying for your coinsurance in a skilled nursing facility, paying your Medicare Part A deductible and paying for the emergency medical expenses in a foreign country. A carrier can decide to offer Plan F instead of Plan C.

United Healthcare Medicare Supplement Plans K and Plan M are considered “cost sharing” plans. They cover:

  • 50-75% of the coinsurance or co-payment for your Medicare Part B
  • the first 3 pints of blood
  • your Part A hospice care coinsurance and co-payment
  • Skilled Nursing Facility care coinsurance
  • and your Part A deductible.

There are many plans that have different benefits and costs. That’s why health experts recommend that you take your time to search for a policy that will offer you comprehensive coverage. You may also need to talk to an agent to help you choose the best plan for your health needs.

The best Medigap plan for you will depend on:

  1. the amount you can afford to pay monthly in premiums
  2. your ability to pay out of pocket costs
  3. and the amount of medical care you expect to need in the future.

United Healthcare Medicare Advantage Plans

United Healthcare Medicare Advantage Plans replace your Original Medicare coverage. You’ll no longer have Medicare Part A & Part B. You’re required to stay within their provider network, and their network can change at anytime.

Even though Medicare Advantage plans may look better up front, in the end they may cost you more money out of pocket. Make sure to compare both options before enrolling.

United Healthcare Medicare Part D

United Healthcare Medicare Part DOriginal Medicare Parts A and B does not cover prescription drugs, unless they are administered in the hospital or in a doctor’s office. To get coverage for your prescriptions, you must purchase a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. United Healthcare offers a variety of prescription drug plans.

  • Like all prescription drug plans, United Healthcare plans divide drugs into tiers, with tier 1 drugs being the least expensive medications with the lowest copays.
  • You typically save money by using a pharmacy in your plan’s network of preferred pharmacies.
  • United Healthcare offers plans with a $0 annual deductible.
  • After you have spent a certain amount of money on prescriptions, your Medicare coverage is reduced until you reach another threshold amount. Some UHC plans offer additional coverage during this “donut hole.”
