Parts of Traditional Medicare
Traditional Medicare is divided into:
Original Medicare is divided into:
The Medicare Advantage plan is divided into:
Part A: Original Medicare Hospital Insurance.
The Part A hospital insurance, part of Original Medicare coverage, helps finance extended hospital stays, skilled nursing facility access, hospice care, and a degree of home healthcare. Any applicants who are 65 years of age or older are considered eligible for the Part A plan. Those who either personally pay or have spouses who pay Medicare taxes while working are exempt from premiums for the Part A plan.
Part B: Original Medicare Medical Insurance
The Part B Medical insurance covers medical services, outpatient care, and medical items. With the Part B plan, 80% of all approved charges are covered, leaving the beneficiary with only 20% of approved charges to finance. Before Medicare will make the benefits accessible, Part B policy will have to satisfy a deductible and pay a monthly premium.
Part C: Medicare Advantage
The Part C Medicare Advantage plan is a combination of both the Part A and Part B Original Medicare terms into one plan. Though the Part C plan is categorized as part of the government Medicare program, they are offered through private insurers. Due to the fact that Medicare Advantage plans are privately offered and managed, they may have additional add-ons that are not available through Original Medicare. In order to be eligible for Medicare Advantage, prospective policyholders must already be registered for both the Part A and Part B Original Medicare plans. You cannot combine Medicare Advantage with a supplement plan.
Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage
After registering for either an Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage plan, policyholders may decide whether or not they would like to include prescription drug coverage. Part D Prescription Drug Coverage plans are designed to help leverage the cost of prescription drugs that fall under the coverage standards outlined by Medicare.
Prospective Part D policyholders should be advised that in some circumstances, coverage for certain prescription drugs may already be provided under the terms of the Medicare Advantage plan. Just as is the case with Medicare Advantage plans, Part D plans are categorized as part of government Medicare while being offered and managed by private insurers.
Cigna Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans
After making a decision on whether or not drug coverage is needed, Original Medicare policyholders also make the decision of whether or not they would like to have Medicare Supplemental insurance. While these insurance plans may be used alongside Original Medicare coverage, their benefits may not be given alongside Medicare Advantage plan coverage. However, Prescription Drug coverage plan benefits may also be received alongside supplement insurance. This Supplement insurance will account for approximately 20% of any Medicare expenses that aren’t financed by the Original Medicare coverage.
