Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)
Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plans are one of the most favored Medicare options among beneficiaries. In 1982, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association with formed.
Over the next decade, obstacles in the form of increased population and economic turbulence brought the company many challenges. In the early 2000s, they became the symbol for affordable quality healthcare that Americans could trust, enrolling over 100 million members.
Most of the retirees in the United States rely on Medicare to cover their healthcare costs. However, Original Medicare only covers a percentage of the total bill leaving the policyholder with additional costs to cover. Supplement plans covers the out of pocket expenses that the policyholders have to pay.
The costs may include medical treatment offered while traveling out of the country, co-payments, and coinsurance as well as deductibles. Private companies provide the insurance coverage to all 50 states in America including Puerto Rica and Washington D.C.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plans
It’s easy to acquire supplement plans as long as you’re a resident of the respective state. The policyholder should also have Original Medicare, which consists of Part A and Part B coverage. Remember that the insurance policy doesn’t cover spouses, so married partners should consider getting separate policies.
If you’re currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, companies can only provide Medigap coverage after you dis-enroll since a policyholder can’t have these two policies at the same time. These plans cover individuals who have attained 65 years of age or have been diagnosed with an end-stage renal disease or any disability.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plans Standardized Plans
This means that the benefits for all plans remain the same across all their 39 companies and others too. The policyholders have a renewal guarantee of their policies as long as they maintain consistency in the payment of their premiums.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama Medicare Supplement plans are one of the most common carriers in the state, along with Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplements in New York, Pennsylvania and Florida.
Open Enrollment Period for Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plans
A policyholder also enjoys a guaranteed enrollment. This means the carrier cannot deny coverage or subject applicants to medical underwriting due to a pre-existing medical condition.
The Open Enrollment Period begins from the day that you first attain 65 years of age AND acquire Part B coverage, your OEP ends six months after it begins.
The insured can also switch from one plan to the other quickly during this period. Carriers companies can deny you coverage or increase your premiums due to bad health if you apply outside of your OEP.
BCBS Medigap Plans
Supplement plans are 10 in total, indicated using alphabetical numbers. They run from A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and Plan N with plans F, G, and N being the most prevalent in most states. Blue Cross provides all ten plans, but they vary from one state to another. Some of the benefits provided by the plans include:
- Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
- 3 pints of blood
- Foreign Travel Emergency
- Pat A Hospice care copay and coinsurance
- Part B co-payment and coinsurance
- Hospitalization coverage for additional 365 days after the exhaustion of the Medicare insurance.
Standardization of plans helps in providing uniform benefits across all the ten plans. However, the insurance costs are different from one carrier to another.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan F
The plans with most benefits, for example, Plan F Medicare Supplement usually have higher premiums than the ones with fewer benefits such as Medicare Supplemental Plan A. Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan F also has a Medigap High F, meaning that the policy holder must cover the deductible first before the insurers pay anything.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan N
Plan N covers 100% of the Part B coinsurance as well as $20 for office visitation and $50 for visits to the emergency room. Plans K and L, on the other hand, have yearly out-of-pocket costs that the policy holder must cover. Then Blue Shield pays 100% of the expenses for the remainder of the calendar year.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan G
Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Supplement Plan G and Plan F both cover Medicare Part B excess charges. Beneficiaries sometimes prefer Plan G because the premium cost less and it still has all the benefit options except coverage for excess charges.
Carriers choose one of the three pricing methods:
- Attained-age rated– the insurance premiums tend to increase as you age. This means that an insurance policy that appears inexpensive at 65 years may end up being the most expensive plan at 80.
- Community-rated plans are the cheapest insurance plans overtime, but they may be a bit expensive at the time of purchase. The insurance company charges the same premium to everyone without any reference to their age.
- Issue-age rated– the insurance companies rely on the age of the policyholder at the time of purchase. The insurance company may increase the premiums due to cost inflation but not due to age.
Policyholders will pay a monthly premium to the private insurance. This is in addition to the in monthly insurance payments that you make to Medicare. Remember that Medigap policies don’t cover private duty nursing, hearing aids, eyeglasses, vision or dental care or long-term care.
Anyone who has acquired Medicare Part B AND attained 65 years of age should consider getting a supplement plan. Remember that Medigap is a supplement to traditional Medicare. It’s not a substitute since it only covers the out of pocket expenses.
